Description: Cache Valley has a serious problem with particulate matter pollution, especially during wintertime inversions. The problem is so severe that the valley is in nonattainment status with the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Several recent planning studies have examined the PM2.5 pollution problem in Cache Valley; however, none have focused enough on that problem to provide adequate solutions for the valley. This study centers on solutions to the PM2.5 pollution problem in Cache Valley. PM2.5 is a complex pollutant because it can be emitted directly into the air or formed
through a complex series of chemical reactions. Because it is so complex, there is no simple solution. Multiple solutions are presented in this paper. Areas such as housing and transportation receive particular focus as they play the largest role in forming the pollution and are appropriately addressed through land-use planning and public policies.
